AutoGPT (Significant Gravitas) is a platform for building agents: a visual builder, a marketplace, an "Otto" coordinator with named Experts, cloud plans at $50 (Pro) and $320 (Max) plus a pay-as-you-go credit wallet, and a self-hostable codebase. AutoAGI is a workspace for delegating work: you state the goal and get a finished deliverable, on plans at $29, $100 and $200 with weekly usage stated in dollars. Choose AutoGPT to build and own agents, and AutoAGI to hand work off without building anything.

When AutoGPT is the better choice

  • You want to see and own the code, or self-host on your own infrastructure with your own model keys.
  • You want a visual canvas and building blocks so you control every step of an agent, or you plan to ship agents as a product.
  • You like the idea of named specialist Experts that you brief and coordinate through Otto.
  • You are comfortable owning setup, monitoring and debugging in exchange for control.
  • A large open-source community and years of public track record matter to you.

When AutoAGI is the better choice

  • You want to hand off a goal and get back finished work, not design the workflow first.
  • You want to know your usage in dollars each week, with no separate wallet to top up for the core work.
  • You already use Claude Code or Codex and want more cloud execution capacity on a separate allowance.
  • You want Jev to score leads, pages or proposals with probabilities.
  • You would rather not run infrastructure at all, and you want the top tier at $200 rather than $320.

What it costs in practice

AutoGPT Pro at $50 covers Otto and Expert chat, and workflow runs draw from a credit wallet on every plan. Because the per-credit rate is not published on the pricing page, your monthly total is the plan price plus whatever your automations spend. That is a normal usage-based model, and it means the only reliable figure is your own bill after a real month.

AutoAGI states the allowance up front. Founder is $29 with $6.70 of usage every week, Pro is $100 with $23, and Max is $200 with $46. Across a month the weekly allowances add up to roughly the membership price. If a week runs heavy, usage credits at face value can cover it when they are on sale. Partly. The AutoGPT platform is under the Polyform Shield license, which is source-available and free for personal and internal business use but bars reselling it as a competing hosted service. The classic AutoGPT and other parts of the repository are under the MIT license.
Which is better for someone who does not code?
AutoAGI is designed for briefing in plain language and receiving a finished deliverable. AutoGPT also lets you describe an outcome in plain English, but its strength is the builder and control it gives you, which suits people who want to shape the workflow.
Can I self-host AutoAGI?
No. AutoAGI is hosted only, at auto.agilayer.com. If self-hosting or inspecting the code is a requirement, AutoGPT is the better fit.
Is AutoAGI the same as the AutoGPT Agent I used with ChatGPT?
It replaced it. The AutoGPT Agent was an AGI Layer custom GPT for ChatGPT, unrelated to AutoGPT from Significant Gravitas. It is retired, and existing subscribers were grandfathered onto AutoAGI. See the legacy AutoGPT Agent page.
