Autonomous AI agents: what they are, how to choose one and what they cost
The term gets stretched to cover everything from a scheduled prompt to a full software team. Here is a definition you can test a product against.
An autonomous AI agent is software that takes a goal, plans the steps, uses tools such as a browser, a code environment or connected apps to carry them out, checks its own progress, and returns a finished result without a person directing each step. A chat assistant answers. An autonomous agent finishes the job, keeps going while you are away, and hands back a deliverable.
Three levels people call "agents"
| Level | What it does | You still have to | Examples |
|---|---|---|---|
| Chat assistant | Answers questions and drafts text in a conversation. | Direct every step and assemble the result. | A chat window, a custom GPT |
| Task agent | Carries out a multi-step task with tools and returns output. | Decide when to start it, and check the output. | ChatGPT Work, a scheduled task, a coding agent in a repo |
| Agent workspace | Plans, executes, saves work, runs on schedules, uses your apps and returns finished deliverables. | Set the goal and review the result. | AutoAGI, Lindy, Manus, AutoGPT |
Five tests for "autonomous"
- It plans. You give a goal, not a script, and it decides the steps.
- It uses tools. Browsing, a code environment or connected apps, not only text generation.
- It keeps going without you. The work continues after you close the tab.
- It has limits. A budget, a time ceiling or a step cap, so a stuck run cannot spend without end.
- It ends in a deliverable. A file, a report, a working page or a change in a connected app, not a chat reply.
A product that passes the first four and not the fifth is a capable assistant. A product that passes all five is a workspace you can delegate to.
What to check before you choose one
| Question | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| How is usage metered? | Credits, actions, activities, tokens and dollars are not interchangeable. Ask what one typical task costs. |
| Is there a hard cap? | A weekly allowance or a per-run ceiling stops a stuck run from draining your balance. |
| Which models can it use? | One vendor's models, or several. Different models suit different work. |
| Can it run code? | Work that needs execution needs a real code environment, not only text. |
| Which apps does it reach, and with what permissions? | Read only or write access, scoped or account-wide, deletions off or on. |
| Where does your data go? | Which providers process it and under whose policy. See how AutoAGI handles data as an example of a plain answer. |
| Can you leave with your work? | Exports in open formats, and a library you can download. |
How agent usage is metered
The plan price is rarely the whole cost, so compare the metering model first.
- Shared allowance. ChatGPT Plus, Pro and Business share one allowance across chat, Work and Codex, and weekly limits may apply.
- Credits. Lindy, Gumloop and AutoGPT sell credits or a credit wallet. Rates and what a task consumes vary widely.
- Activities or actions. Zapier Agents counts activities and Relevance AI counts actions.
- Dollars per week. AutoAGI states a weekly allowance in dollars, metered on what the work consumed, reset every 7 days.
- Your own API bill. Self-hosted frameworks pass model costs straight through.

Which kind of agent fits which job
| Job | Look at |
|---|---|
| Delegate research, writing, analysis and reports | A hosted agent workspace such as AutoAGI |
| Score hundreds of leads, pages or proposals | Jev analysis |
| Build and ship a small app or scripts | A cloud coding harness. See Claude Code and Codex in the cloud |
| Wire triggers across thousands of apps | A workflow tool with agent steps |
| Build custom agents you own | AutoGPT and other frameworks |
| Automate your everyday ChatGPT use | How to automate ChatGPT |
Where autonomous agents still fall short
- Vague goals produce vague output. A specific brief with a clear finish line matters more than the product.
- Long tasks can stall or need a nudge. Good products keep the workspace so the next run resumes.
- Agents can be wrong with confidence. Check the top results and anything that reaches customers.
- Some websites block automated access, and not every transaction can be automated.
